A roof leak is hard to find because most of the time, where the leak ends up is far away from where it starts.
Water typically comes in through worn, broken, or missing shingles; so in order to look where the leak comes from, you have to look for a roof leak during the day.
How to Find the Leak
When you’re trying to track down a leak, start by looking at the roof uphill from the stains. The first thing to look for is any roof penetrations. Items that penetrate the roof are by far the most common source of leaks. Penetrations can include plumbing and roof vents, chimneys, dormers or anything else that projects through the roof. They can be several feet above the leak or to the right or left of it.
If you have attic access, the easiest way to track down a leak is to go up there with a flashlight and look for the evidence. There will be water stains, black marks or mold.
Water-Testing for Finding Difficult Roof Leaks
If a leak is difficult and hard to find, ask for a helper to go on the roof and bring a hose, and you should go into the attic to wait for the leak.
Start low, soaking the area just above where the leak appears in the house. Isolate areas when you run the hose. Let the hose run for several minutes in one area before moving it up the roof a little farther.
The person in the attic should watch carefully until a drip appears. Once the leak is found, push a nail up through the hole to mark its location for rooftop repair. Mark the surface of the roof with chalk, if necessary.
Fast Fix for a Roof Leak
If you know that a roof leak is being caused by a hole, sometimes you can temporarily fix it with a galvanized sheet metal flashing, available at almost any home improvement center or hardware store. Lift the damaged shingle with one hand and insert the galvanized sheet metal flashing.
